Special Unit 2 is a specialized unit of the Chicago police department that deals with Links, which are the missing link in evolution–anything that's not man or beast. Links are the basis of myths and folk legends across the world, but most people cannot understand or acknowledge their existence. When these Links get out of control, Special Unit 2 is called in.
To outsiders, the unit is a group of deep-cover plainsclothes officers for whom you should get out of the way. To those on the inside, the unit is an eclectic mix of people who are trained to protect the world from Links and who operate from their base in an abandoned subway line underneath a dry cleaning business.
Detective Kate Benson is brought into Special Unit 2 when she becomes entangled in another case involving a Link; she has always more easily believed in "monsters" even though everyone she knew insisted they did not exist and is glad to finally know the truth. She is partnered with Detective Nick O'Malley, who enjoys killing Links as his job because of an incident two years previous that killed his previous partner. Carl, a gnome, is a Link who works with Special Unit 2 as a (relatively) trusted Link who will use his contacts to help the police solve their cases–if the team looks the other way on his tendency to commit robbery. Captain Richard Page, having faked a retirement from regular police work five years ago, oversees them all.

Nick and Kate hunt a Djinn, a “genie”-like Link that is compelled to make people's wishes come true. But if she grants enough wishes, she will gain free will and be able to do whatever she wants, including decimating mankind.
