Unexpected deaths continue to strike vulnerable patients. Westphall comes to suspect a dreadful possibility: the difficult to treat form of pneumonia called Legionnaires' Disease. He wants to close the affected ward, but initially cannot convince hospital administrator Cummings or Dr. Auschlander.
Legionnaires' Disease, now called legionellosis, is a potentially fatal disease caused by bacteria of the genus legionella. It's name comes from the location of the first known large outbreak: an American Legion meeting that occurred in 1976 in a Philadelphia hotel. It is particularly dangerous in hospitals, where patients with various forms of chronic illness and immune system damage that render them particularly vulnerable are common. Symptoms include coughing, fever and chills, and diarrhea.
