Racial tensions between the Irish and black kids escalate. Dr. Fiscus treats a prostitute with appendicitis - when her friends visit they disrupt the hospital. Dr. White's wife comes bearing unpleasant news: she's pregnant. Dr. Craig throws a party for Sven Holstrum, a visiting cardiac surgeon. Dr. Ehrlich tries to escape the party, but cannot, so he needs a date. And then he makes a fool of himself when he drinks away his nervousness. When a young black boy dies of the violence, Kevin O'Connor feels responsible, and threatens his own life, because he didn't tell the truth about what happened.
Dr. Westphall: You want to swing on me? You want to hit me? Wouldn't you feel a little more comfortable with a baseball bat in your hand? I learned to fight same place you did, pally-boy, and there's nothing I'd like better than to take you apart!
Dr. Westphall is usually the definition of calm, extremely patient with his subordinates, which is what makes him an excellent instructor. In this episode, we see him moved to rare anger by the bigotry of a man whose mistreatment of his own son grew far beyond the family, eventually sparking racial violence.
