E.L. arrives at the office and discovers that Lionel is repainting and bringing in potted plants. Lionel finally gets around to explaining that his parents will be there the next day on a visit, and he's trying to make the office look better because his father William, the vice president of the Allied Insurance Group, expects penthouse suites. He's worried that the place makes him look unsuccessful, and E.L. offers him a penthouse and a car. When Lionel refuses, E.L. accuses him of not trusting him. Harriet Whitney: I can remember when I was growing up...
Lionel: I'm not growing up, Mom. I'm 28.
Harriet Whitney: Well, that's true, I was a good deal younger than that. But I can remember how firm I was in my decision to make something of my life. Something different, something exciting.
Lionel: So what'd you do?
Harriet Whitney: Well, I couldn't really decide on anything, so I married your father.
Lionel: I'll leave my name and address so the authorities know how to contact me.
