Sister Carmel comes to the diner and tells The Man that she has met someone, explaining that despite saying earlier that she wouldn’t, she had to keep going. The nun met the man at Mass who caught her eye because she was praying, and she recognized him from a museum she went to. Richard: She says that you make things happen.
The Man: I don't.
Jenny: He doesn't make things happen.
The Man: I provide opportunities.
Jenny: It's like, he gives you a button and you can push it to get what you want.
The Man: There was a man who wanted something and I opened the book, and it said to protect the girl you chose.

James: The book?
The Man: James, I'm a messenger of opportunity.
James: I knew you were jerking me around.

Sister Carmel: Wait a minute. I might hear God again even if I don't do the deal?
The Man: Of course. There are always many different resolutions of any given problem. I... offer only one.
Sister Carmel: Do you believe in God?
The Man: I believe in the details.
The Man: Willem, why did you kidnap her?
Willem: To be the hero.
The Man: The what?
Willem: To be the hero just once.
The Man: Ah. Hero.
Willem: So I can get whatever I want and I don't have to make deals with men like you.
The Man: Do you not often choose, James?
James: My whole life I've been doing what's in front of me. Not thinking about it much. I... high school, college, the job, I've just been walking forward. So no, I never really chose.
The Man: What was that like? Choosing?
James: It's good.
