A long time ago the evil Näsäs forced all elves to escape from their caves and Finland. Many years later, an old elf called Iki Iäkäs is dying because the music box playing the melody of his life is stopping. The key of the music box is in a cave in Finland. Three elves, Kauko, Toivo and Hande have to go get the key and return before Iki Iäkäs dies. They get solutions to their problems from the Book of Knowledge. The elves are in danger if a Näsä gets the book. A man called Pentti Nieksen is staying on a farm near the cave because his car broke and was stolen. Pentti gets the book, and for some reason, is very interested in it. Farmer Olli Santanen, his wife Kerttu and their dog Vikki don't know anything about the whole thing.
The Joulukalenteri was based on a Danish series called The Julekalender. A Norwegian version was also made. The Joulukalenteri was shown on MTV3 in 1997 and 1998 and on Subtv in 2007. It was produced by MTV-Viihde in association with Saks Film & TV (who also produced the Danish version). Much of the humor came from the fact that the elves spoke Finglish. The show only had four actors, each playing two characters. The show was very popular during its original run and has been released on DVD. A CD featuring the songs from the series was also released in 1997.
