The Legends of Treasure Island

The Legends of Treasure Island

The island where nothing is ever quite what it seems and almost anything can happen...

The Legends of Treasure Island is a sharp animated cartoon series based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island but with a couple of twists. Firstly, the characters were animated animals. Secondly, the island was a bigger place, exploring parts not seen in Stevenson’s book. It was more sinister and almost personified (à la Lost), behaving in various magical ways to aid our heroes or thwart the villains. It’s only really the first episode that bears any resemblance to the original story.

Young pup Jim Hawkins is given a map laden with riddles and clues by his father which once belonged to pirate Flint. With his companions, that old seadog Captain Abraham Smollett, bumbling pidgeon Squire Trelawney and pooch Doctor Livesey, they set out to find the treasure before it falls into the hands of that sly fox Long John Silver and his pirates who are being controlled by the mysterious Pew (based on Blind Man Pew but has a more substantial role in this cartoon), a mysterious rat with wizened eyes. Jim is also aided by his female tomboy vixen friend Jane (an exclusive to this series) and sometimes marooned dog Ben Gunn.

A variety of British actors lent their voices to the characters.

Unfortunately nowadays, The Legends of Treasure Island is considered a forgotten cartoon series.

I have added synopses to each episode in Series 1 as well as recaps and am now working on Series 2. I may add character profiles and merchandise as well in future.

The perplexed Jim asks how the two can play chess if Ben’s here and Jack’s there when a bell rings.
