After the death of Sweet Billy, Mary Ellen decides to go back to school to become a doctor. After being discouraged by her college advisor to take classes in another field, Mary Ellen gets some advice from Sweet Billy's sister to not give up on her dream. Meanwhile, the other Walton women get prepared for Jason's birthday party.

When Mary Ellen is unable to help Sweet Billy when he is ill, she and John have to take him to the hospital, only to have him die en route. Feeling discouraged about what happened, Mary Ellen decides to go back to college to become a doctor. However, when her advisor looks over her schedule and sees the medical classes on it, he does his best to change her major to home economics or nursing. When she tells him that she already is a nurse and knows about taking care of children and a home, Mary Ellen goes home, slightly discouraged. However, after she talks to Ronie, Mary Ellen decides to continue on with her dreams of becoming a doctor and eventually goes back to the college admissions office to tell her advisor that she will do whatever it takes to get into the pre-med program in order to become a doctor to help the people on the mountain...
