"The Yellow Rose" is a prime-time soap with a new twist: Its characters like and respect each other. Executive producers John Wilder and Michael Zinberg are trying to prove TV can do a soap not centered in "failed relationships." Cybill Shepherd stars as a young widow whose husband, Ward Champion, was the all-powerful owner of the Yellow Rose, a 200.000-acre cattle ranch in Texas.
She's a strong woman with a healthy libido, but she's a nice person. David Soul and Edward Albert are the ranch's other two owners, sons of the late Ward Champion. They're determined to keep their ranch but they can't agree on how to solve its financial problems. Soul, a rancher at heart, is determined to fend off his attorney brother's plan to sell the ranch's oil rights.
Walking into this mix Sunday night is Sam Elliott as a ranchhand named Chance. He's an ex-con who has done time for murder, but he's so solid it's possible he was framed.
Still, he does seem to have a secret. Susan Anspach plays an interesting pivotal role as the ranch's cook. Miss Shepherd's friend and the would-be girlfriend of at least one of the male principals.
Rounding out the main cast are Noah Beery and Ken Curtis as grizzled, old ranchhands.
Chuck Connors, wearing a white wig and walking with a cane, is the villain who wants to get his hands on the Yellow Rose's oil.
Soldier's Day is celebrated at the Yellow Rose ranch. Everybody is joyful in the plain where the memorial party is held. During the event, Jed Fargo (William Smith), a prison mate of Chance's turns up, he's holding a grudge against Chance and now he wants to get even, spoiling the celebration in doing so. : The Yellow Rose is the name of a 200,000-acre cattle ranch 75 miles from San Antonio, Texas. Cybill Shepherd, Sam Elliott and David Soul are the players seen most often on the spread. Everything is up-to-date at the contemporary Yellow Rose, where the owners fly around in their private jet and worry about dope being run in across their land from Mexico.
The creator of the ranch, Wade Champion, was 65 years old when he married a beautiful 19-year-old blonde. He died happily a few years later and now his widow, Coleen Champion, portrayed by Shepherd, is the queen of his old domain.
The working boss of the Yellow Rose is Wade's oldest son, Roy Champion, portrayed by Soul. In the premiere, Roy seemed bleakly unhappy for one so rich, grieving over his recent divorce and so worried about losing the ranch that he was drinking bourbon at breakfast time. The premiere marked the arrival of Chance, a mysterious man with no last name, to work as a hand on the ranch. He hardly had time to punch a dogie before practically all the women around started kissing on him. Sam Elliott portrays Chance.
