Primetime Ratings, Tuesday, 5/6/14

CBS once again won Tuesday night in all measures.

'NCIS' started off the Eye's night by shedding two of the three tenths it gained last week, posting a 2.3. Conversely, 'NCIS: LA' bumped up a tenth to a 2.2. 'Person of Interest' wrapped things up on a down note, dipping two tenths to a 1.7, and tying its previous series low.

Over on the Peacock, 'The Voice' plunged two tenths to a new all-time low of 2.5. The tumbles just kept on coming, with 'About a Boy' and 'Growing Up Fisher' falling to new series lows of 1.5 and 1.2 respectively. At this late stage though, the decision to renew them has probably already been made. 'Chicago Fire' rose a single tenth to a 1.9.

ABC had a down night as well, with 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' falling two tenths to a 1.9. 'The Goldbergs' took an even bigger hit, plummeting four tenths to a new series low of 1.3. Like 'Boy' and 'Fisher' above, I doubt a late season drop will hurt its renewal chances much. One show that won't be renewed is 'Trophy Wife,' which hit a new low of 0.7. 'Celebrity Wife Swap' rose a tenth to a 0.9.

FOX's 'Glee' fell to a new all-time low of 0.8. It wasn't all bad for the network though, as the season finale of 'New Girl' rose a tenth to a 1.2, while 'The Mindy Project's finale rose two tenths to a 1.3. As for The CW, 'The Originals' recovery was short-lived, dipping two tenths to match its series low of 0.6. 'Supernatural' also shed two tenths, posting a 0.8.

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)
