Earlier today, the interwebs lit up like wildfire over the news of Kerry Washington's confirmed pregnancy. And while fans are overjoyed about the actress's exciting news, it also left many wondering what this could mean for her character Olivia Pope, not to mention the 'Scandal' series in general. Will the writers give Pope her own little Baby Gladiator bun in the oven?
Sources tell E! News that ABC and executive producer Shonda Rhimes are already in the early stages of figuring out how to address Washington's pregnancy on the show. However, that doesn't necessarily mean Ms. Pope will be getting her very own baby bump. In fact, one insider says that it's "unlikely" that the character become pregnant, saying, "It would slow Olivia and the show down." Umm, is that even possible? Plus, you just KNOW she could totally rock a maternity pantsuit.
Apparently, the most likely scenario is that the pregnancy will simply be hidden and the production schedule will get slightly altered if necessary. So far, no official changes have been made to the schedule, aside from the actress taking this week off in order to prepare for her hosting stint on 'Saturday Night Live' this weekend. So, we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
Ironically, E! News recently asked Washington if it's a possibility for Olivia to get pregnant, to which she replied: "I don't know. God, those are Shonda questions! I really never know where the show is going. That's the part I love about television, you just don't know what the beginning the middle and end is going to be, so really anything can happen. Olivia can die, she can get married, she can get pregnant—anything can really happen."
Of course, the two most likely fathers would either be Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) or Jake (Scott Foley), and it's hard to say which one we'd prefer over the other. Talk about 'Sophie's Choice'! But since Jake's currently in the midst of plotting to kill Liv's father and Fitz is...you know...married, things could get a bit awkward. We'll just have to trust Rhimes' genius to "handle it" in true Olivia Pope-style. After all, she's made it work several times before on 'Grey's Anatomy,' so this should be a piece of cake, right?
Now it's your turn, fellow Gladiators! What do you think should happen on 'Scandal'? Do you want to see Olivia Pope get pregnant? If so, who would you pick to be the father? Sound off on all your opinions in the comments below!
'Scandal' airs on Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
