Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon is an American screenwriter/producer/director and was born on June 23, 1964 in New York City. Whedon is a third-generation TV writer as his father wrote for The Golden Girls and his grandfather for The Donna Reed Show. Whedon's first gig was on the writing staff of the classic 90's sitcom Roseanne. In 1992, Whedon wrote the script for the film Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but when that flopped he worked as a script doctor on various films for several years. Then in 1997, he pitched a TV series version of the Buffy story to networks, with upstart channel the WB taking a chance on it. BTVS would go to become one of the most critically acclaimed cult classics of the decade. Along the way, he spun-off the character of Angel into his own successful series. In 2002, he created the short-lived but well regarded sci-fi series Firefly for FOX, and later in 2005, the film adaptation of it called Serenity. He worked with FOX again on the Eliza Dushku vehicle Dollhouse. Joss has a huge 2012 planned, as he wrote and produced the new horror film The Cabin In The Woods, and his biggest project yet The Avengers hits theaters on May 4th.

Trivia

Is the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its spin-off Angel and the futuristic series Firefly.

Attended and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1987.

Son of Tom Whedon and Grandson of John Whedon

Personal Quote: Remember to always be yourself. Unless you suck.

Personal Quote: I'd rather make a show 100 people need to see, than a show that 1000 people want to see.

Has said that the X-Men character Kitty Pryde (AKA Shadowcat) is a major influence for the character of Buffy.

Personal Quote: If there's a bigger influence on Buffy than Kitty, I don’t know what it was. She was an adolescent girl finding out she has great power and dealing with it.

After his show Firefly was canceled, he vowed to find a way to continue the story no matter what. A couple of years later, Universal Studios decided to pick up the franchise and make it into a feature film, Serenity.

Is currently writing the first 24 issues of Astonishing X-Men for Marvel Comics.

Most episodes of Buffy he writes, he also directs.
