A Closer Walk with Thee - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->

Everyone in the French Quarter is attending Kieran’s funeral. Klaus goes up to the casket to pay his respects. But when he opens it, he finds a baby inside. He smiles and goes to pick it up, but when he does he gets staked in the back by his father, Mikael. Klaus wakes up with a start. It was only just a bad dream.

Genevieve is explaining to the young witches what when most supernaturals die they are forced to walk among the living without ever being seen. Monique privately presses Genevieve to carry out the ancestors’ wishes and kill Klaus’ baby. Genevieve assures her that she will, but she’s allowing them to morn Kieran’s death first.

Cami runs into Klaus, who is heavily drinking during the traditional funeral festivities. He admits to her about the dreams that he’s having about his father, assuming his fear of becoming a father is manifesting in that way. Cami is surprised to hear him speak about his child. Just then, Marcel enters the room and Klaus tells Cami that he knows more about fatherhood than she thinks.

Flashback

Klaus goes to visit a young Marcel’s master and demands that he give the boy his freedom so he can come stay with him. The man eventually agrees, meanly remarking that he was no use to him anyway. While leaving, Marcel admits that the man is his father.

Present day

Marcel gives a nice toast to Kieran’s memory, which brings Cami to tears, causing her to step outside for a moment. Francesca seizes the opportunity to introduce herself and ask her if she has any idea about the whereabouts of Kieran’s key. Cami has no idea where it is and storms out.

Hayley shows up to discuss the status of the moonlight rings. Klaus assures her he’s working on it. He mentions in front of Elijah the nightmares he’s been having, which surprises his brother since he’s been having very similar dreams. They both think Genevieve is behind it.

Elijah and Klaus confront Genevieve in private about the dreams they’ve been having, but she denies having any involvement, but promises to try and get answers. Klaus decides to let her go, hoping this courtesy will make her more willing to make the moonlight rings later on.

As a way to have fun practicing their powers, Davina suggests they perform a séance to see her friend Tim. But instead of him appearing, Mikael shows up and then quickly disappears.

Cami tells Marcel about Francesca’s curiosity about Kieran’s key. Marcel admits that he’s the one who has it and had Josh grab it for him. He explains that the key leads to something that can stop the supernaturals if they ever get too far out of line. He wants to keep the secret safe, but doesn’t know what it is or where it’s hidden.

Genevieve reports back to Klaus and Elijah that the purgatory is disintegrating, just like what’s happening over in Mystic Falls. So Mikael is choosing the remaining time he has left to haunt his children before he gets torn away into nothing.

Hayley goes to see Francesca and asks if she had anything to do with the bombings that happened in the woods. Francesca assures her she had nothing to do with it and remarks that if she were trying to attack the wolves, she’d go directly after Hayley. Just as she leaves, Monique comes up behind her and starts whispering an incantation with a voodoo doll.

During the funeral procession the next day, Hayley begins coughing up blood and falls to the ground. Elijah, Klaus, and Genevieve take her someplace private to try and revitalize her, but she’s stopped breathing.

Hayley wakes up in the spiritual plane and runs into Mikael, who wants to kill her and the baby. Genevieve realizes what Monique did and is able to reverse the process right as Hayley stakes Mikael through his already dead heart. She starts breathing again and tells them she saw Mikael. This prompts her to decide to move back into the compound with Klaus to keep the baby safe.

Before Genevieve leaves, Elijah thanks her for all of her help and asks for a favor. He wants to make it possible for Hayley to no longer be forced to transform on the full moon once the baby is born. The spell can be found in his mother’s Grimoire, which he knows Genevieve has been dying to get her hands on. She smiles.

Cami takes Marcel to her brother Sean’s secluded grave, thinking perhaps Kieran had hidden the key there where no one would ever think to look. They find something with a cryptic code written on it. Cami understands what it means, but refuses to tell Marcel. It was her family’s secret, which makes it her responsibility now.

Genevieve reprimands Monique for her attack on Hayley, explaining that the baby needs to be born first before dying, so her witch power can consecrate the earth. However, privately she pleads to the ancestors to not make her kill an innocent baby. They get angry and start making her bleed through her eyes and nose. She promises to do whatever they want.

Klaus reminds Marcel that his time away from exile is almost up. They recall to the moment when Klaus finally turned him into a vampire. He knows Marcel was the one responsible for Mikael’s reappearance. Marcel reminds Klaus that he was the one who taught him never to be weak. So if a war starts, he plans on fighting until he dies.

Elijah admits to Hayley how scared he was when he thought she was dead. He goes to leave, but Hayley calls out to him and the two of them finally kiss.

Davina is visited once again by Mikael, who promises her that he can help rid the world of Klaus forever. But he needs her to do something for him first: bring him back to life.
