The Good, the Bad & the Baby - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A bleeding man walks into a church and approaches a priest holding mass. The man hands the priest a baby before he falls to the ground.

Beckett thinks Castle has bought too much food for Thanksgiving but he explains all of the purchases. He outlines the costumes they will wear and she mentions that it's strange to dress up for Thanksgiving. Castle thinks it's normal though. Beckett receives a text about a murder in a church and they head out.

At the crime scene, Kevin and Javier explain what happened to the man and the baby he brought in. The victim's name is Cameron Ducane but they don't know if the baby is his. He drives for a living and has a car wash receipt. Beckett says they will give the baby to child services but Castle offers to look after it.

The car that Cameron took to the church has bullet holes and a lot of blood inside. Javier receives a call and learns from Cameron's wife that the baby isn't theirs.

Beckett meets with Alissa Ducane and asks if Cameron had a baby outside of their marriage. He would have told her about this if he did. She knew something was wrong when he hadn't come home from work. A few weeks ago he went crazy and put locks on their doors and wanted to keep his family safe.

Kevin and Javier talk to Cameron's boss, Roman, and learn that Cameron didn't show up to work last night. He had seen Cameron talking to a man he was scared of. Roman describes a tattoo that the man had on his arm. Kevin wonders what happened in the eight and a half hour gap from when Cameron left for work to when he died in the church.

Castle returns to the station with a lot of items for the baby, who he has named Cosmo. Kevin offers to hold the baby as practice. He finds he's not ready when the baby starts crying. Javier has a hit on the tattoo and it belongs to Jimmy Wolfinsky. He was arrested for a bank robbery seven years ago and he just got parole two weeks ago. He was caught because his partner bolted with the car. A sketch of the partner shows that it was Cameron.

Castle explains his theory about Jimmy's revenge but he can't explain where the baby came from. Beckett says no one has reported a missing baby and the parents may be dead. Parish arrive and says that the victim must have been shot near the church because he didn't live long after being shot. A substance was found under Cameron's fingernails that is highly flammable, charred celluloid.

Kevin and Javier find that Jimmy's apartment is empty and the landlord hasn't seen him in days. Javier will look into Jimmy's associates that may have helped him escape. Kevin goes into a store to buy lottery tickets while Javier calls the station. He hangs up when he sees Jimmy walking down the street towards him. Jimmy runs when he sees Javier's badge. Kevin exits the store as Javier walks by with Jimmy in handcuffs.

Beckett and Javier questions Jimmy at the station. He denies knowing Cameron and says he never had a partner. Jimmy is shocked when they tell him that Cameron is dead. He's never seen the baby before and asks what the baby has to do with it.

Beckett learns that Jimmy was telling the truth and his alibi checks out. Sandra Whitman from child services shows up and offers to take the baby. Castle figures out that Beckett didn't want to hold Cosmo because she didn't want to get attached. She's also not much of a fan of babies.

Javier and Kevin used GPS information to see where Cameron went on his breaks after he stopped returning to the limo shop for them. He went to the Colfax building and would take a different route to a certain building. Beckett thinks he was back in the robbery life and planning a getaway. They have surveillance footage of the night that Cameron was murdered. Two men were with him and it looks like they participated in the heist.

Beckett and Castle meet with Walter Dennis from Kirby Security. He says that there are no signs of entry but Beckett needs to view the surveillance. Dennis also offers them a list of tenants.

Kevin stresses to Javier that he's not ready for a baby. Javier tries to explain that no one is ever ready. The fact that Kevin cares about his child is already better than Javier's father. They arrive at the spot where Cameron's route ended and Kevin spots a bullet hole in a news box. He points to a window up in the building that has broken glass. The team heads up and finds signs of a fight and a fire. There is also a dirty diaper and Beckett wonders why there was a baby here in the first place.

Beckett has contacted every business in the Colfax building but no one has had any money loss or a missing baby. Javier says the Ducanes were having money problems recently. Castle doesn't think that Cameron is a bad guy because of all he did to help the baby survive. On their way out of the station, they see Sandra still there with the baby. She hasn't been able to find a foster home this close to Thanksgiving so Castle volunteers to care for it.

Back at home, Castle and Beckett struggle to take care of the baby. Cosmo was so well behaved back at the precinct but he's just crying at home. The baby barfs on Castle and Beckett even manages to hold Cosmo. All they have to do now is get him to sleep. They wake up to find Martha taking care of Cosmo. Alexis enters and asks how long she has been gone for.

At the station, Javier hands them reports of charred celluloid being found in the building they searched. The blood was from someone related to the baby but they don't know who. He thinks they don't have any information but Beckett wonders where all of their garbage went.

Castle and Beckett search through a dumpster for any clues. He says he took the baby somewhat for his own benefit because he had to raise Alexis by himself. Beckett promises that when the time comes she will help raise their child. Javier and Kevin find some items in another dumpster. The same diapers the baby was wearing, a wine preservation kit, argon canisters, and ping pong balls. Castle thinks the balls were used to light the fire and Beckett tells them to get the items to the lab. There is a receipt to a gas station with a time stamp.

Castle and Beckett review surveillance footage from the gas station but never see the man's face. Kevin calls everyone out to watch the Magicball lottery draw. Castle grabs Cameron's lottery ticket that was found on him and uses it to predict the winning numbers. He thinks this is motive for the crime. They fixed the lottery and the robbery was just an exchange. Argon was put in the balls so that they wouldn't fit through the holes. The robbers picked specific balls to win.

Beckett and Castle meet with a man from the lottery. He says only two people have access to the locked cases of balls. There are several cases but only one is randomly chosen. The person that chooses the case is the lottery announcer, Miranda Vail. She has been with the company for ten years and has a three month old baby. Beckett thinks Miranda chose the tampered case and also that Cosmo is her baby. Miranda has already left the building though so Beckett chases her down outside. She's in a hurry and doesn't want to stop. Beckett says they have her baby and Miranda asks about her husband. The robbers also had him.

Back at the station, Miranda informs Beckett and Castle that her husband and baby were being held hostage. She was the one who had to pick the right set of balls or else she was told she would be sorry. Castle asks how they were going to get away with it. Miranda said that after they moved the money out of the country they would release Paul.

Parish asks what will happen if the robbers suspect that the police are onto them. Beckett says that if they have any doubt about their safety they will kill Paul. Castle suggests that the thieves may have another man on the inside, Walter Dennis. They worry that he may have been forced into this too. They look into his history and find that he used to be a corrupt cop.

Javier has found a series of calls between Dennis and Roman's limo service from the last few days. They aren't sure who the calls were made to since Cameron was already dead.

The team stops the robbers in a parking garage. Roman is helping other men load Paul into the trunk of a car. Beckett arrests the men and frees Paul.

Back at the station, Paul reunites with Miranda. Roman pressured Cameron into joining their ring of thieves because of his past. He changed his mind when he overheard that the Vails would all be killed in a framed accident. He tried to save them but was only able to escape with the baby. Cameron gave his life to save their child.

Everyone is about to be at Castle's for Thanksgiving dinner. Martha is shocked to see Beckett's Thanksgiving costume. Castle was only joking about the costumes but Beckett wasn't sure. Just to be safe she already has a pilgrim suit picked out for him.
