Primetime Ratings, Thursday, 5/22/14

NBC won among adults 18-49, while CBS drew in the most total viewers.

'Hollywood Game Night' matched last week's 1.1 to start things for the Peacock. The two-hour season premiere of 'Last Comic Standing' earned a 1.7, down three tenths from the 2.0 its last season opener scored. To be fair, that last season was way back in 2010.

FOX's 'Hell's Kitchen' dipped one tenth to a 1.6. The series premiere of 'Gang Related' pulled down a 0.9 in the demos, and just under three million total viewers. For an "in-season" program that would equal instant death, but summer series tend to get much more ratings latitude. I'm going to wait and see what next week's episode does before I make an official prediction.

Surrounded by reruns, the Eye's canceled sitcom 'Bad Teacher' tumbled down three tenths to a 1.1. It deserves to be noted that a rerun of 'The Big Bang Theory' still managed to handily dominate 8 p.m, despite going up against three new offerings from NBC, FOX, and The CW.

ABC's 'Black Box' is rapidly collapsing, falling three tenths to a new series low of 0.8. Yep, this one's a goner for sure. The premiere broadcast of new CW miniseries 'Labyrinth' (unrelated to the cult classic film starring David Bowie) was D.O.A., earning a pitiful 0.4.

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)
