Saturday Night Live, now in its thirty-seventh season, will feature Steve Buscemi as host tonight. It is a night of two-timers as the Black Keys will be the musical guest. Buscemi currently stars in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. He also has a guest starring role as a detective on the NBC comedy 30 Rock.
This is the second time Buscemi has hosted Saturday Night Live. His first appearance was all the way back in 1998! The SNL cast of this year was one of the greatest featuring Will Ferrell and Maya Rudolph. In the 90's, Buscemi was a well-known actor for his work with the Cohen brothers and Quentin Tarantino. Popular roles he has played are Mr. Pink in Resvoir Dogs and Donny in The Big Lebowski. Currently he stars on Boardwalk Empire, which is in its second season on HBO. The story tackles corruption in Atlantic City during prohibition. Bucemi plays the main character Enoch "Nucky" Thompson.
The promos for SNL tonight have been hilarious. First we have promos with Andy Samburg. The second set features Bill Hader. The best one of this set is the last. Bill asks Steve how he got the role in Fargo. Very dark humor, but it works.
Saturday Night Live is one of those shows that suffers from imbalance. Some casts have amazed us such as the early 90's, which featured Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz, Dana Carvey and Mike Myers . Some cast are quickly forgotten such as the members from the early 80's. I doubt you remember that Robert Downey JR. was a cast member in 1985.
The current cast has gone through some shake-ups recently. Last year, Jorma Taccone left the show. He is best known for being one-third of the Lonely Island trio. Will forte also left during the 2010 season. It is likely that two other stars will leave soon. Kristen Wiig has been on the show since 2005, but with the blockbuster success for her film Bridesmaids there is little SNL has to offer her. Fred Armisen has also found recognition away from SNL with his series Portlandia. It would be sad to see either of them leave, but that is the nature of Saturday Night Live. Either you fade into obscurity or you move on to bigger projects. The constant over turn of cast members is one of the traits that has kept the show alive for 35 years.
SNL can always be found in its regular time slot, 11:30 pm EST on NBC.
