The Machine reviews Finch's meeting with Beth Bridges in Hong Kong, and Samaritan's interest in her.

At an underground casino in New York, Reese is playing and winning. Finch checks in and tells him that their new Number is the hostess, Frankie Wells. Frankie arrived from a small town in Florida four days ago. The owner of the club is Ray, no last name known. As Reese watches, Frankie spills a drink on Ray, who angrily drags her outside. Reese goes after them to the kitchen, and finds Frankie putting a choke hold on Ray. She tells Ray that they're going for a ride, and attack Reese when he tries to intervene. As they fight, she drops her phone. Reese finally draws a gun on her just as Ray's security guards come in. Jackie runs out and Reese reaches for his badge, only to realize that Jackie stole it.

The next morning, Finch is working at the subway station when Root comes in. She points out that he seems distracted, and Finch says that he's going to meet with Beth for coffee. Finch goes to the diner where Beth is talking with the Decima representative, Mr. Flint. He informs her that his employer is pleased with her predictive algorithms. Finch comes over and Beth tells him that her investors are going to install her hard drive with her algorithm into their system. Beth is going to send it in two days. Finch invites her to dinner the next night to celebrate, and Beth agrees.

At the station, Reese approaches Iris and she says that she has to end his therapy sessions. He wonders if it's because of the violence he told her in their last sessions, but Iris refuses to discuss it and merely says that he needs to continue with a new doctor. Fusco comes over and Reese tells him about Jackie. It turns out that all the information Finch dug up on Frankie is faked. They bring up the photos on her phone and realize that she's had Ray under surveillance for days. There are several addresses listed, and Fusco starts calling to see if anyone has used Reese's badge. Finch calls to confirm that Reese texted him a new Number. He asks when it came in but refuses to say why it's important. Once he signs off, he brings up information on the Number: Beth.

Frankie goes to a bar and flashes Reese's badge, and says that she's looking for a girl named Athena with Ray. Reese comes in and grabs her, and she says that she's after Ray. His last name is Pratt, and he jumped bail in Florida on conspiracy charges. Reese realizes that Frankie is a bounty hunter, and she figures that Ray will be leaving the country so he'll come looking for fake papers. The expert is Athena, who works out of the bar.

Ray comes in, sees Frankie, and runs. Frankie throws Reese off of her and goes after him, but Athena pulls up and rescues him. Reese runs out and realizes that Athena is the woman he knows as Harper Rose.

Back at the station, Frankie shows Reese and Fusco the bail contract on Ray. Ray skipped bail three months ago after committing crimes with Carlton Worthy. Carlton is a casino mogul into prostitution, and Ray ran his operations until he got caught. If she doesn't bring Ray in then she'll lose the $1 million that she put up. Reese frees her but says that they have reason to believe her life is in danger. He says that he's the best hope she has of finding Harper.

Finch arranges a meeting with Root at a diner, and explains that Beth's Number came up the moment that he met her for coffee. Root doesn't figure that Samaritan is involved, or Beth would already be dead, and agrees to help Finch even though it's clear he's not telling her everything.

At the station, Reese makes some calls to track down Harper. Iris comes in and they look awkwardly at each other for a moment. Reese goes back to his desk and says that he's had no luck finding Harper. He explains how Harper went up against the cartels, and Frankie asks for more data.

Finch and Root follow Beth, and Root admits that she's been in awe of him for creating the Machine. She prepares to clone Beth's phone, but Finch warns her back and explains that Greer is interested in Beth. They follow her into a hotel and Root is less than thrilled that Finch didn't tell her about Beth's connection to Decima. Beth calls Finch and suggests a sushi restaurant. Finch agrees and hangs up, and Root realizes that Finch likes Beth. They watch as a man approaches Beth and says that he wanted to talk. Root offers to get close enough to listen and then report back to Finch later, and he reluctantly agrees.

That night, Harper goes to a club and Frankie and Reese corner her in the restroom. They figure she had Ray go into hiding until she could make a high-end fake for him. Frankie says that she won't let Ray leave the country, but Reese says that they're leaving and takes Frankie out.

Root meets with Finch at his college office and says that the man left just after Finch did, and Beth went up to her room and turned. In. She took photos of the man and Fusco is going to run them. They go into the office and discover that someone has torn it apart.

Reese and Frankie follow Harper, figuring that she'll meet with Ray to give him the fake IDs. He bluejacked two of Harper's three phones, and Frankie says that she bluejacked the third one. Harper calls a man named Dash and tells him that she and Ray are heading to meet him. She drives off and Reese and Frankie follow them. As Frankie prepares to move in against Reese's advice, a SUV slams into the car. The men inside open fire, but discover that a homeless man is driving the car. Reese starts kneecappng the shooters, while Frankie takes out the others. Two of the men knock Reese out and grab Frankie, and Carlton gets out of the SUV and introduces himself as his men knock the bounty hunter out.

The next morning, Reese and Frankie wake up and discover that they're handcuffed to each other in a butcher's shop, and Reese's other wrist is handcuffed to a counter. Carlton comes in and demands to know where Ray is, and explains that Ray stole $100,000 from him. He figures that Frankie has another lead and doesn't believe her denial. Carlton gives Reese ten minutes to change her mind or his men will kill them both.

Root and Finch continue following Beth, and Finch suggests that the break-in is related to his interest in Beth. He tells Root that he built a narrow AI that could provide a backdoor Trojan door into Samaritan and hid it in Beth's algorithm. The Trojan Horse is dormant until he activates it, and he needs to get the activator close to Beth's laptop at dinner that night. Finch warns that the program can only be used once, and Samaritan will trace the activator and destroy the person holding it. Finch wonders how it's related to the break-in, and Root suggests that isn't. Meanwhile, the man--Wolfram--approaches Beth again. She tells her ex-husband to go back to London and stop embarrassing her. Root figures that Wolfram trashed Finch's office, and Beth's Number came up because he was watching them when they met. She abruptly says that she has to go. When Finch offers to help, Root says that he's a good friend but she has to do it herself.

At the butcher shop, Frankie tries to spring the handcuffs with a knife. When that doesn't work, Frankie tries to find a paperclip, and explains that her brother Deacon gave her the knife. She grabs the paperclip just as Carlton's men come in. Reese and Frankie take them on and defeat them despite the fact they're still handcuffed at the wrist. They drag the men into a meat locker and lock them up, and Frankie kisses Reese. She walks off, and Reese realizes that Frankie handcuffed him to the freezer door. The bounty hunter admits that she's a liar and says that she has to capture Ray herself.

Finch secretly follows Root to Beth's hotel room and goes inside. She's searching through Beth's bags and isn't surprised to see Finch there. Root claims that she's just there to confirm that Wolfram is the threat, but Finch asks her if the threat to Beth's life is her. She admits that she's going to have to kill Beth.

Once he frees himself, Reese goes back to the station and Fusco says that Ray used to work for his uncle at a dry-dock business that's closed. They figure that Frankie knows about it, and Fusco warns that Ray may be a killer. He's been checking into Ray and discovered that his accountant turned up dead with a slashed throat. The cops figured it for a mugging, but Fusco confirmed that Ray argued with the man the day before.

At the dry dock, Harper comes to see Ray with the papers. He invites her up to the office and she reluctantly goes upstairs.

Finch figures that Root watched them at the diner, and then trashed his office. Root says that she was looking for the activator, and explains that once the algorithm is activated, Samaritan will link Finch to Beth and have him killed. As they talk, Root prepares a vial of neurotoxin. Finch begs her not to do it, but Root assures him that Beth's death will be painless.

Reese goes to the dock and calls in to Fusco. Fusco has confirmed that the accountant's name was Deacon, and Reese realizes that Ray isn't the perp. He tells Fusco to look into Deacon's background.

Harper gives Ray the papers, and he offers her a thumb drive with all of Carlton's illegal transactions. She isn't interested, but Ray tells her to take it or leave it. When she reaches for it, he draws a knife. However, Frankie arrives, gun drawn, and tells Harper to go. She leaves with the drive and Frankie pistol-whips Ray and prepares to kill him.

Root prepares to knock Finch out so he doesn't have to watch Beth die. He begs her not to kill Beth, but Root says that she knew that Finch wouldn't stop. As she prepares to drug him unconscious, Finch says that his plan will fail if Root kills Beth, and the mission is too important. Root admits that Finch is too important to her, and Finch realizes that the Machine told Root not to kill Beth. She ignored her god when she realized that she couldn't lose Sam and Finch. Desperate, Finch grabs the vial of neurotoxin and drinks it, and tells Root that there's no reason to kill Beth if he's dead.

As Harper looks on, Frankie tells Ray that she doesn't have to get him to court alive. She fires a shot into the wall and says that she'll claim Ray shot at her and she shot back in self-defense. Reese comes in and says that Ray killed Frankie's brother. Ray admits that Deacon came to him when he found he was stealing from Carlton, and wanted to do the right thing. Frankie realized that she had to handle it herself. Reese grabs for the gun and in the struggle it falls to the floor. Ray grabs it and takes Harper hostage. He runs outside, using Harper as a shield, and then takes cover and returns fire. Carlton and his men arrive and open fire on Ray.

Root calls 911, warning him that Finch will die in eleven minutes. Finch yanks the phone line out of the wall and says that when they come, he'll refuse to go.

The three sides fire on each other, and Harper tells Ray that she can get him out alive. She then calls to Carlton and asks if he's ready to make a deal. Harper offers him the drive in return for her freedom. Reese will take Ray alone, because Carlton hasn't killed anyone. Reese agrees, and tells Frankie that Ray is going to go to jail. She refuses but Reese stops her, pointing out that keeping Ray will save Harper's life. He asks her to agree, and after a moment Frankie does. Harper tosses Carlton the drive and he leaves with his men. Ray refuses to go to jail and prepares to shoot Harper, and Reese kneecaps him.

Root begs Finch to stop, but he reminds her that she won't kill Beth if he's dead. He refuses to be responsible for one more friend's death. Root tells him that Sam's death isn't his fault, if she turns up dead, and insists that she's the one who asked Sam to help. Finch collapses and Root gives her word that Beth will live. He accepts it and she takes him to the elevator. Beth comes down the hall and just misses seeing Finch.

As the police secure the dry dock, Reese tells Harper to give him the real drive. She refuses, saying that it's her fair and square. Harper explains that someone sent her encrypted texts and she figures that they came from Finch. One of them was Thornhill, and Reese, recognizing the Machine's fake human ID, tells Harper to get out of there. She leaves before he changes his mind, and Reese leaves a message with Finch that Harper is getting texts from the Machine.

Finch goes to Beth's room after receiving a text saying that she's cancelling dinner. She furious with him and reveals that the International Mathematical Society received a letter claiming that she forged data. There's proof that it came from Finch's university account. Finch insists that it's a fake, but Beth doesn't believe him and wonders if everything that they had is a fake. She slams the door in his face and he walks away.

At the station, Reese tells Frankie that after he made a call, the NYPD picked up Carlton as he tried to leave the city. Frankie hesitates and then hugs Reese, and tells him to call when he's a free man. As she leaves, Iris comes in and orders Reese to her office. When they get there, the therapist admits that she ended their sessions because she's a coward. Iris admits that he's afraid of him because she has feelings for him, and it's unethical. Reese stares at her, and after a moment Iris kisses him anyway. Reese doesn't respond and Iris starts to walk away, but Reese grabs her and kisses her, and then says that he's good at keeping secrets.

Finch goes to the station and finds Root waiting for him. She says that it had to be, and points out that at least he and Beth are still alive. Finch realizes that the activator is gone, and Root says that she destroyed it. He insists that the Trojan Horse was important, and Root says that as long as he's alive, it doesn't matter if they're friends. After a moment, Finch puts a hand on her shoulder and says that he doesn't want to see her for a while. Root takes his hand for a moment, says that she understands, and leaves. Skip04
