Assuras was born in London, Ontario, Canada. She was graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an honors bachelor of science degree/ microbiology and immunology and with a master’s degree in journalism. Assuras lives in the Washington D.C. area. Previously, she anchored “Canada AM,” CTV’s morning news broadcast, co-anchored “Canada AM Weekend” and substitute-anchored the “CTV Weekend News” (1992-93). Assuras also served as a field correspondent. Assuras joined CBS News from ABC, where she was an anchor for “World News Now” and “World News This Morning” (1993-96) and a general assignment correspondent. Assuras has been a CBS News correspondent since 1997, reporting for a variety of CBS News broadcasts. She has filed numerous international stories, including reports from Iraq, where she covered the U.S. military action following the fall of Saddam Hussein and was one of the first television journalists to report live from Tikrit only hours after his capture. She also covered the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in Bam, Iran and the Kosovo refugee crisis in Albania. Assuras has also covered a wide range of domestic stories, including the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Elian Gonzalez controversy and Hurricane Floyd, and has interviewed world leaders ranging from President Bill Clinton to the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. She is the recipient of several journalism awards including the Marie Torre Memorial Award (2001), a Sigma Delta Chi Award for Journalism, a Canadian MediaWatch Award and a University of Western Ontario Journalism Award. Thalia has been a national correspondent, based in Washington, D.C., for CBS News’ The Early Show since January 2002. She also serves as one of the primary anchors of the Saturday edition of the CBS Evening News and as a CBS Newscorrespondent, contributing to many broadcasts. Previously, Assuras co-anchored The Saturday Early Show (1999-2001). She also served as co-anchor of CBS News’ weekday morning news broadcast, This Morning (1999) and anchored the early morning CBS Morning News.
