Listing all characters in the group Main Characters (5)

Charlie Kelly, played by Charlie Day (1)

First and foremost, Charlie is a proud American. Like any good American, he's a bit dense. He often fails to understand even the simplest things, and his comprehension is most likely influenced by his illiteracy and his penchant for huffing glue. These two qualities, combined with the fact that he lives in filth, prohibit Charlie from getting the respect of the coffee shop waitress whom he frequently pursues. Besides chasing the waitress, he also enjoys dressing up in costumes, buying horses, collecting Garbage Pail Kids cards, and wearing long underwear.

Growing up, Charlie never knew his father. However, his mother had a one night stand with Frank Reynolds, Dennis and Dee's dad, thirty years ago, leading the gang to suspect that Frank is his true father. Speaking of his childhood, Charlie almost died at a very young age when his mother tried to have him aborted. Fortunately for Charlie, the abortion was unsuccessful.

Dennis Reynolds, played by Glenn Howerton

Many of the words that best describe Dennis are unfit for children's ears. He's extremely pompous, especially about his appearance. Dennis never passes up an opportunity to pop off his shirt and allow anyone within distance to observe his perfect body. He's constantly vying for the attention of women and is completely oblivious to the notion that not all women find him desirable. Dennis is probably the most intelligent person of the group, which isn't saying much. After all, he did wind up briefly addicted to crack.

Dennis' arrogance likely stems from his popularity in high school. Unlike his twin sister, Dee, Dennis had many friends growing up. After high school, Dennis went on to college and minored in psychology. He recently found out that Frank is not his real father. His mother (RIP) had an affair with Bruce Mathis, a philanthropist who is disgusted by just how awful his children turned out.

Mac, played by Rob McElhenney

Mac craves acceptance and is constantly trying to fit in with those around him. For example, he once tried to become a member of the mob when he was rejected by the rest of the gang. He also felt neglected when he found out that a school teacher had molested many students but not him. Mac had a short relationship with Carmen, a transsexual with a noticeable bulge in her jeans. However, the romance was thrust into oblivion when he refused to be seen in public with her. Mac doesn't think things through very well and continually just conforms to those around him.

As children, Mac and Charlie spent a lot of time together doing normal kid activities like huffing glue, burning G.I. Joes, and throwing rocks at cats. Mac's father spent the majority of Mac's life in prison. As a result, he missed out on a lot of father-son bonding. The two later reunited, which Mac tried to use as an opportunity to regain those lost moments.

Dee Reynolds, played by Kaitlin Olson

Dee is Dennis' twin sister and bartender at Paddy's. Though she's female, she fits in perfectly with the guys and is every bit as despicable as they are. She can be a bit more levelheaded than some of the others, but she rarely stops herself from getting involved in their schemes. Dee often goes after guys who are not quite right for her, including gays, minors, criminals, and retards. She's very insecure about her herself and often falls victims to the guys' jokes about how old and ugly she is. However, Dee's a tough chick who doesn't hesitate to dish out her own insults.

During her teenage years, Dee wore a back brace for her scoliosis. As a result, she was known throughout school as the "aluminum monster" and didn't have many friends. She aspired to be an actress or model but never achieved the fame she desired. She did manage to go to college where she majored in psychology. Unfortunately, she failed the majority of her classes.

Frank Reynolds [Season 2–present], played by Danny DeVito

Frank is Dennis and Dee's father. After deciding to divorce his wife, he pays his children a visit, hoping to get more involved in their lives. Once he shows up, it becomes very clear why Dennis and Dee turned out the way they did. Frank is quite sordid and has no problem referring to his wife as a whore. There is some truth to this accusation, though, considering that she had an affair with another man many years ago. This brings to light that Frank is not even Dennis and Dee's biological father. However, Frank then learns that he's Charlie's father due to a one-night stand he had thirty years ago.

Initially, Frank simply wanted to be accepted as a part of their group. However, the enormous amount of money he managed to accumulate over the years gives him a certain power over the rest of the guys. When the opportunity arises, he buys part of the bar and blackmails the rest of the gang into allowing him to stick around.
