Each year since 1921, the Miss America pageant has been held which gives a young woman from each state, plus the District of Columbia and Virgin Islandsa chance at winning the crown and a scholarship. The contest consist of talent, interview and beauty. The first televised contest was in 1954 and was always held in September, except for the 2000 contest which was held in October in Atlantic City. Now the pageant has moved to Las Vegas and is held in January.

Fifty-three women between the ages of 17 and 24 vie for the crown held by reigning queen Caressa Cameron. Judges include Joy Behar ("The View"); ballroom dancer Tony Dovolani; "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry; and country singer Marc Wills.
