“What If: Armageddon 1962” will take us back to 1960 and reveal the little known and almost forgotten fact that a deranged suicide bomber named Richard Pavlick stalked and was seconds away from killing John F Kennedy before he even took office as President. It will then pose a provocative “what if” scenario: how would history have changed had JFK been killed on that December day and Lyndon Johnson became president instead – more than three years earlier than he finally did?
Through remarkable archival film footage and photographs, we’ll describe how the turbulent history of the early ‘60’s might have played out differently with LBJ – and not JFK – in office. With a backdrop of the Cold War and the terrifying nuclear arms race between the US and the Soviet Union, we’ll re-imagine the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the fate of millions was truly in the balance.
We’ll hear from esteemed Cold War experts who will reset history with LBJ at the helm of a conflict now believed to be JFK’s greatest test as a world leader. How would Johnson have handled the pressure of this unprecedented international crisis – when diplomatic and military conflicts threatened to spiral into full scale nuclear war? We will see how one false move or one miscommunication could have brought the world to the brink of world-wide apocalypse.
