Primetime Ratings, Tuesday, 5/13/14

Person of Interest (CBS)

CBS once again won Tuesday in all measures.

'NCIS' season finale started off the Eye's night by rising a healthy three tenths to a 2.6. Unfortunately, that's down almost a full point from the 3.4 2013's swan song earned. 'NCIS: LA's finale also increased three tenths, posting a 2.5. That's right in line with last year's conclusion. Finally, the season finale of 'Person of Interest' rose two tenths to a 1.9, down half a point from last season's capper.

Over on the Peacock, 'The Voice' rose a single tenth to a 2.6, tying 'NCIS'. The penultimate episode of 'About a Boy' rose one tenth to a 1.6. The season finale then gave that tenth back, returning to last week's 1.5. Still, that's up three tenths from the 1.2 that axed comedy 'Growing Up Fisher' last earned in the same slot. The second season finale of 'Chicago Fire' matched last week's 1.9, besting the 1.7 earned by last year's climactic installment.

The season finale of 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' rose one tenth to a 2.0 for ABC. The season finale of 'The Goldbergs' bumped up two tenths to a 1.5. Axed sitcom 'Trophy Wife' was somewhat vindicated in death, rising two tenths to a 0.9. 'Celebrity Wife Swap' stayed flat with last week's 0.9.

The season finale of FOX's 'Glee' achieved the dubious honor of setting a new series low for the once popular comedy, dipping two tenths to a 0.6. The series premiere of improv game show 'Riot' scored a dreadful 0.5. If I predicted the fate of unscripted shows, this would equal a guaranteed cancellation.

As for The CW, the season finale of 'The Originals' increased two tenths to a 0.8, a good but not great level of improvement. 'Supernatural' also earned a 0.8, matching last week. For those keeping score, The CW soundly crushed FOX in the 18-49 demo, something that happens once in a blue moon.

PRIMETIME PROGNOSTICATION

Brace yourself faithful readers, as Primetime Prognostication is about to do some house cleaning. With cancellation/renewal decisions for every scripted broadcast network show now in, every show that has already aired all its episodes for this season is being removed from its network's respective section, to make room for soon to premiere summer series.

As further shows end their seasons, they too will be removed from their corresponding sections. I've also cleaned up and updated my final prediction stats chart for the 2013-2014 TV season, which can be viewed at the bottom. That will stay put until the end of May. I will continue to make predictions for all scripted summer programs, and start the whole thing over in the fall.

The five main factors I consider when making a prediction are thus:

1. Does the show win its timeslot, and how often? (CW shows are exempt from this criteria.)

2. How do the show's ratings compare to similar programs on the same network? (Self explanatory.)

3. How long has the show been on the air? (Veteran series are always more likely to get renewed.)

4. Does the show have any high-profile leads? (Never discount star power.)

5. How much does the show cost to make? (Approximately, exact TV budgets are hard to come by.)
