Syfy Cancels Sanctuary After Four Seasons

Sanctuary cast

Canadian produced sci-fi/fantasy series Sanctuary has quietly been a mainstay of Syfy's original programming lineup since its debut in October 2008. Its one of those shows that kind of flys under the radar of the TV world, but has still earned a passionate cult fanbase. That of course being something that science fiction programming does like no other genre.

This announcement has been rumored for some time. After all, the season four (and now series) finale aired way back in December of 2011. It's very unusual for a network to put off making an announcement about a show's fate for that long, unless they're simply putting off dropping the axe. Sadly for fans, that has turned out to be the case.

For those unaware, Sanctuary followed lead character Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team as they search for super powered creatures or people, known as "Abnormals". The team attempts to both help and study the friendlier subjects, but must also capture and contain the dangerous Abnormals within the titular sanctuary.

Mark Stern, President of Syfy's original programming department had this to say - "We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, 'Sanctuary' was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques -- including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology -- and Emmy-nominated visual effects. It's been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler."

Star Amanda Tapping, series creator Damian Kindler, and executive producer Martin Wood issued this joint statement to Sanctuary's fans - "We couldn’t be prouder of the four seasons we made on Sanctuary… We are very grateful for the opportunity and must acknowledge the wonderful work from our cast and crew, the support from our studio, the Beedie Group–who have been with us right from the start, the networks who worked so hard with us each week, and most of all the fans … we owe so much to the fans.”

Will you miss Sanctuary? Did Syfy make the right call?

Sanctuary was a great show! Yes, I will miss it.

Sadly, I don't see a bright future for the SyFy Channel.  Cancelling long-running series, importing British shows (why not just buy the rights and air the original versions?), and, GHOD help us all, Wrestling, and reality TV:  A cooking show.  Paranormal this, that, and the other.  Ghost hunters (and you ought to hear what the people that actually do that kind of work have to say about the various Ghost Hunters shows). Dream Machine?  Seriously? What the frell is that about? And I hear Jaleel "Steve Urkel" has some sort of prank show coming to the network.

HOW DOES ONE START THEIR OWN NETWORK?!  You can believe that if I ran that network, there would be some changes made, and some heads rolling!

Same with Fox canceling Terra Nova, The Finder, Alcatraz, etc. Fringe will be next; it's pretty much guaranteed anymore. Their reason: it's far more cost effective to produce reality shows that draw in huge numbers of viewers. So who's fault is it? The writers? The Networks? Or the mindless people who actually think reality TV is "real" and worth watching??? F* reality TV! If we want good shows that stick around then please start educating your friends on how lame and worthless reality TV is ruining it for the rest of us!

Yes I will miss this show a lot. The reason thers very little sci0fi on tv these days is all about money. Sci-fi shows cost much more than all the crap reality shows put together. And all the sheepies love them as thier no need to think unlike sci-fi. syfy should be done for false advetiseing now as there barely any sci-fi on it any more

Nooo!! SyFy is really turning into a reality show network. Now, all that's left is Warehouse 13 (and maybe Alphas). Thanks, Syfy, another network off my list. First Eureka, now Sanctuary.

I'm worried whether Warehouse 13 will make it past this season :(

I second that! Loved this show, especially since there is very little true sci-fi left on TV now. Bring back quality PROPER sci-fi! - like star trek, stargate, babylon 5, earth final conflict. Granted, sanctuary was not set in space, nor did it have that many aliens, but it was almost as good, and well written. We'll miss it! Lets hope Amanda, Damian & Martin bring us something just as good or better to replace it!

No, sadly on this one SyFy blew it. Sanctuary had it's best season ever and was well placed to set off in a wonderful direction of storytelling! The sky was always the limit with Sanctuary but if they'd gotten a season 5 I believe they were truly limitless! Kudos to Amanda, Damian & Martin for four years of "out of the box", one of a kind and a truly unique show. They broke new ground and n the process gave us an amazing character in Dr. Helen Magnus. One that will stand the test of time for sure. Smart, savvy, razor wit, ass kickin, as well as beautiful. Killer combo. Along with a cast os characters that won't long be forgotten! Dr. Helen Magnus is a roll model for young women and thankfully through dvd's and syndication will be for a long time to come. But that's just one fans opinion.
