I've got bad news to report today for fans of recently departed Spartacus star Lucy Lawless. It seems that everyone's favorite Warrior Princess might just end doing some pretty serious hard time, although the former Xena's heart seems to have been in the right place.
Back in February, Lawless and five other Greenpeace activists camped on the top of an oil drilling tower on the ship the Noble Discoverer, while protesting Arctic fossil fuel exploration in her native New Zealand. They were subsequently charged with unlawful trespass, and Lawless was among the activists to plead guilty in a court of law on Thursday. The actress did receive a bit of good fortune though, as prosecutors chose to reduce the original charge of burglary that she was facing to the lesser charge of trespass.
It seems that the New Zealand justice system moves just as slowly as the American one, as Lawless isn't due to be sentenced until September. She faces a maximum sentence of three years in jail, although she could obviously (and probably will) end up receiving a lesser term. She may even get lucky and do no jail time at all if the sentencing judge takes pity on her. That said, a possible years long jail stint is definitely a very serious matter.
I realize that this type of activism is a very divisive issue to some, but no matter what your stance, I think we can all agree that Lawless herself felt that she was doing the right and moral thing here. We'll just have to wait and see if a judge agrees with her in September.
Do you think Lucy Lawless will serve jail time? Does she deserve to?
