Piers Morgan responds to critics in new column, threatens to deport self

Piers MorganIn response to a pair of petitions centering around Piers Morgan – one requesting that the White House deport him, the other asking him to stay – the British journalist and host of CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight has fired back on Twitter and in a column published in the Daily Mail.

Following the tragic schoolhouse massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, Morgan used his position on television to call for stricter gun control laws, earning the wrath of the pro-gun lobby in the United States. Nearly 100,000 people have signed an online White House petition demanding the deportation of the British-born host due to the threat he poses to their Second Amendment rights, apparently trumping his First Amendment rights. While on vacation in the UK for the holidays, Morgan issued a response via Twitter on Friday noting that only 90,000 people had signed the White House petition, leaving 310,910,000 Americans who presumably want him to stay in the country.

After sparring with critics on Twitter, Morgan lashed out in a column he penned for the Daily Mail, in which he lays out his argument in a rational and reasonable fashion. Morgan points out that the British government's response to the worst school shooting in UK history in 1996 was to implement stricter gun control laws, leading to an extremely low average of 35 gun murders per year since the laws were passed. Piers Morgan TonightSince he first came to the US in 2007 to work as a judge on America's Got Talent, Morgan mentions that six of the country's 12 worst-ever mass shootings have occurred without a meaningful reaction from politicians fearful of the power wielded by the National Rifle Association and its pro-gun lobby. Backing up his arguments with statistics and facts, Morgan proposes his own centrist solutions to the problems as he advocates tighter gun control, increased funding for mental health treatment, and a more responsible entertainment industry.

"In conclusion, I can spare those Americans who want me deported a lot of effort by saying this: If you don't change your gun laws to at least try to stop this relentless tidal wave of murderous carnage, then you don't have to worry about deporting me," Morgan writes. "Although I love the country as a second home and one that has treated me incredibly well, I would, as a concerned parent first – and latterly, of a one-year-old daughter who may attend an American elementary school like Sandy Hook in three years' time – seriously consider deporting myself."

Leaving aside personal opinions on Piers Morgan, his column is required reading in this instance. How do you feel about it?

Morgan is becoming another Benedict Arnold, a man without a country, if you remember history. From what I am reading the UK does not want the blow hard idiot there and I am sure the US is very tired of his mouth. Morgan, try Austailia, maybe they will let you go there if you behave yourself!

Gun Control? Piers Morgan painted this wonderful picture of the low gun crime rate in the UK. He neglected to mention, the UK has the highest violent crime rate in Europe and even surpasses the US. The Yahoo anti-gun censors will not let me list any sources of information. So do an internet search "what is the violent crime rate in the UK" you will find several articles that list the number of stabbings, deaths, beatings, rapes and so on. They are the highest in Europe and surpass the US. They don't use guns there to much, knives and other weapons seem to be the choice. Reality Check: Gun control is not stopping crime there. Gun control will not stop crime here in the US The White House need to address, the lack of Mental Health care, sticking a bandaid on this issue won’t help

Having never watched your program and not intending to, I have read enough comments and enough editorials about it to be glad I never wasted my time on what would be, apparently, a waste of my time. Please tell me who took you by the hand and forced you to come to the USA. I am content to let you go back "Home" and take some other former Brits (like Paul McCartney and others who like the money but not the company) with you. Some of your countrymen appear unhappy here, so please take them with you, too. Oh yes, please don't waste your time waiting to see what we do with "our" country and its laws, just leave now. To those so-called Americans who would like to go to GB with Morgan, he might lend you the money to go. Why not ask him? Maybe we need to look at the root cause of these shootings in America and get help for the people who cause these kinds of problems. They probably could have been stopped before these shootings happened if we could get past the lack of money for their treatment. The parents aren't always wealthy enough to do it on their own.

Tell that British asshole when he gets to the hooligan country called Great Britain to check the facts about his own damn country where cops don't even enter certain parts of the city. This is the United States of America , and will continue to be the United States of America regardless of what the assholes like Morgan try to do to change it! Stay the fuck out you cocky British ass, we DON'T want u here. God bless America

I see a well organized dialogue coming from morgan, I also see some pretty simple minded responses from posters here;/ At least give some rational thought besides "hur dur Go away" The only person you belittle by making these remarks is yourselves. On topic, the 2nd amendment was established when the greatest weapon was a gun that took 10min to reload 1 shot;p. There honestly should be some DISCUSSION on this issue, and not stupid comments saying someone is un-american for feeling differently then you.

One only needs to read comments by other members of the NRA to see how they react to mere words.Along with their mentality Better not make someone mad when they are holding an assault weapon The Present Adams Can you imagine what they are teaching their kids? The future Adams of this country? Wonder how Adam's mother sounded when she argued gun control? Maybe that lit a fire under him who knows. Maybe all of you on all these websites that spew your hatred for gun control and hatred toward anyone who wants gun control are reinforcing more Adams maybe you already have Just go on any news article on gun control and read the comments. Yeah, most of you on these sites have no right to own a handgun, much less an assault weapon. Piers is sick and tired of having our young children and innocent adults SLAUGHTERED like MILLIONS OF AMERICANS. Thank you Piers for caring about this country, thank you for caring about our children

And drinking better beer than some of that crap they brew now! Connecticut passed an assault weapons ban in 1993 and IT DIDN'T WORK. so now he wants to do it in the federal level.Pierce go back to England where all guns ban (from all private hands) and the police are now armed.
