The Ed Sullivan Show (Change Layout)

"The Ed Sullivan Show" Summary

For over 24 years Ed Sullivan brought a wide variety of entertainment to the American audience, from future rock n' roll legends to ventriloquists, Toast of the Town gave some very memorable (and not so memorable) entertainers their place in television history.

CBS Television hired Sullivan in 1948 to host a program entitled Toast Of The Town, which would air weekly on Sunday nights. This later became The Ed Sullivan Show. The program originated each week from CBS Studio 50 on Broadway in New York City, which in 1967 was renamed the Ed Sullivan Theater and is now the home of The Late Show with David Letterman.

Among his many accolades, Sullivan is credited for "discovering" The Beatles, as they were in the process of conquering Europe and the rest of the world, and bringing them to the United States, featuring them three weeks in a row in early 1964. The Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, February 9, 1964, was the most-watched television program in history to that point, and remains one of the most-watched TV programs of all time.
