Former Spartacus Star Lucy Lawless Facing Up To Three Years In Jail

Lucy Lawless on Spartcus

I've got bad news to report today for fans of recently departed Spartacus star Lucy Lawless. It seems that everyone's favorite Warrior Princess might just end doing some pretty serious hard time, although the former Xena's heart seems to have been in the right place.

Back in February, Lawless and five other Greenpeace activists camped on the top of an oil drilling tower on the ship the Noble Discoverer, while protesting Arctic fossil fuel exploration in her native New Zealand. They were subsequently charged with unlawful trespass, and Lawless was among the activists to plead guilty in a court of law on Thursday. The actress did receive a bit of good fortune though, as prosecutors chose to reduce the original charge of burglary that she was facing to the lesser charge of trespass.

It seems that the New Zealand justice system moves just as slowly as the American one, as Lawless isn't due to be sentenced until September. She faces a maximum sentence of three years in jail, although she could obviously (and probably will) end up receiving a lesser term. She may even get lucky and do no jail time at all if the sentencing judge takes pity on her. That said, a possible years long jail stint is definitely a very serious matter.

I realize that this type of activism is a very divisive issue to some, but no matter what your stance, I think we can all agree that Lawless herself felt that she was doing the right and moral thing here. We'll just have to wait and see if a judge agrees with her in September.

Do you think Lucy Lawless will serve jail time? Does she deserve to?

No I don't think she deserves jail time she and the others were standing up for what they believe in. More people should have the guts to stand up for what they believe in. As long as they didn't cause any damage.and I am an oilfield worker here in Texas!! You Have To Stand For Something Or You Will Fall For Anything.

"Greenpeace is a communist organization bent on destroying the West!" - What are you even talking about? Do you even know what communists are? I take it that you are yet another ill informed American loud-mouth NRA member who thinks that anyone who doesn't agree with American policy is a Communist, a Socialist, a Liberal or whatever else you can think of that you don't understand?

Trespass is just above a petty offense. NO JAIL TIME, especially for someone with no criminal history. If they have the room to house someone in their jails for a crime like that then they dont have much crime at all. Maybe I'll move to New Zealand because Cook County, Illinois would laugh at that. Give her a fine and community service. There is nothing to be gained from locking her up.

Give that mental hypocrite criminal the three years. She and the other criminals were reckless and endangered themselves and others. If 8 strangers went on her property and when told to leave they refused you think she wouldn't want them put in jail- well it what they did.Do the crime do the time. You come on my property unwelcomed and will shot your ass.NZers are weak-their laws are pathetically weak.their are the laughingstock of the world.Shell is not the first to drill up there--it want be the last.

Unfortunately? I'd rather have sentencing done by courts and judges than the mob. Just look at the disastrous ways some jury cases turn out. If we start letting public opinion influence the courts, we can just as well abolish the justice system altogether.

No matter how much one thinks her actions might have been morally justified and with the right intentions, it's still important that she be tried based on the facts, like everybody else. "The end justifies the means" is not a good credo for a society. You may or may nor applaud that some people are willing to take personal risks for their convictions and ideals, but they are, and need to be, very well aware that jail time is what they risk by doing it. Otherwise, it's just one step to "oh, yeah sure, he killed that man, husband, and father of four to rob him of his watch and wallet, but he did it to feed his own family, so it's all ok..."

If this was you or me there would not be any thing news worthy about this and as such the Judge would probably want to make sure that people heard about it by giving us a hefty sentence to put others off from doing the same thing. But as there has been a bit of attention due to Lucy's celeb status, she will probably only get probation. Pffffffft, oh to be a star.

Unfortunately NZ courts don't take pressure from the public at all. They don't listen to us at all so her punishment is purely in the courts hands. Knowing where she is being scentenced and the particular judge involved he won't look kindly at her as he is a very hard judge who gives hard sentences. We will just have to wait and see
