Judi Dench

Dame Judi was born on December 9th, 1934 in York, England, and is one of the most versatile leading classical actresses of recent history,. Judi is unique in having sustained a television career that, both in breadth and depth, more than matches her work for the stage. The three roles for which she received, in the same year, a clutch of Best Actress and Best Light Entertainment Performance awards--a cancer ward sister in the single drama Going Gently, Ranyevskya in The Cherry Orchard and the gauche but capable Laura in the situation comedy series A Fine Romance--epitomize the versatility of this distinctive and popular performer and the range of work with which she has been associated across a career spanning four decades and some thirty parts. She was also made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1988.

After many roles in film and television, Judi still prefers her first love: the stage. She can still be seen performing in many plays throughout London.
