A beautiful and wealthy young socialite called Iris Carr is used to being at the centre of her social group. After her friends’ behaviour escalates to a new level while on holiday in the Balkans she decides to seek out some peace and queit and travel home alone. Her hopes of peace are soon shattered though when at the railway station she wilts in the scorching heat and faints suddenly on the platform. She wakes up just in time to be rushed on to the train but with a pounding head and a feeling of being in a dream. She ends up being comforted by an older English lady called Miss Froy who has a surprisingly jovial and adventurous spirit.
