Edward Asner

Edward Asner, who was born November 15 in Kansas City, Kan., has the distinction of being a seven-time Emmy winner, and a four-time Emmy nominee, including Emmys for both drama and comedy for the same character.
He attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, where he worked on his school newspaper and first became interested in acting in high school radio classes. His other main interest was sports, and he was an all-city tackle in high school.
Asner pursued acting while attending the University of Chicago. His first stage role was as Thomas a Becket in "Murder in the Cathedral." After two years of Army service in France, he joined the Playwright's Theatre Club in Chicago, then made his Broadway debut in "Face of a Hero" with Jack Lemmon. He also performed Off Broadway, at the American Shakespeare and New York Shakespeare Festivals, and in stock.
He moved to Hollywood in 1961 and began a busy film and television career, the latter marked by Emmy Awards in 1978 and 1980 for best dramatic actor in "Lou Grant," the same character he played in 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show," which won him Emmys for comedy in 1975, 1972 and 1971. His other Emmys were for "Roots" in 1972 and "Rich Man, Poor Man" in 1976. He won two Television Critics' Circle Awards, for "Lou Grant" and "Roots," and the 1978 Golden Globe and Man of the Year in Broadcasting by the Hollywood Radio and Television Society, for "Lou Grant." He was nominated for another Emmy for "Lou Grant" in 1979.
Asner was a regular on the "Slattery's People" series, and his motion pictures-for-television include 'The Family Man," "The Good Doctor," "The Huey Long Story," The Gathering," and "Hey, I'm Alive." He also appeared in the specials, "A Salute to American Imagination" and "Raised in Anger." Asner stars in "A Small Killing," a motion picture-for-television on the Network.
His feature films include the upcoming "O'Hara's Wife," "Fort Apache, The Bronx," "Peter Gunn," "The Slender Thread," "The Satan Bug," "Kid Galahad" and "The Wrestler." In 1975, he toured for two months in a stage production of "Born Yesterday."
Asner is active in a variety of political, public service and charitable causes. He also jogs and is an avid newspaper reader. He lives in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles with his wife, Nancy. They have twins, Matthew and Liza (b. 9/9/63), and daughter, Kate (b. 4/16/67).
