Gervais appeared on the box several times from 1998 onwards but his big break came in 2001 as the star and co-writer of the award-winning "mockumentary", The Office

Gervais' next TV series, Extras
, whose first 6-episode season aired in 2005, features himself in the starring role again. In this, he plays an aspiring actor who soon realises how difficult it can be to land the big jobs. Guest stars have included such Hollywood heavyweights as Samuel L. Jackson
and Ben Stiller
Gervais has released two stand-up DVD's: Animals and Politics. The shows are themed as their titles suggest and he has plans for a third tour and DVD called Science.
He is currently collaborating with Stephen Merchant
and Karl Pilkington on a hilarious weekly podcast titled "The Ricky Gervais Show" which can be found at the Guardian Unlimited website.
He has written two children's books called Flanimals
and More Flanimals
