Penny Dreadful

Penny Dreadful

In Penny Dreadful, some of literature's most famously terrifying characters - including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula - become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation. This project marks Logan and Mendes' second major collaboration, following Skyfall, their recent critically-acclaimed and box office record-breaking James Bond film, which Mendes directed and Logan co-wrote; and their first ever collaboration for television. The project will be produced by Mendes' production company Neal Street Productions.

It's like they tried to lay X-Men or Heroes over a combo Frankenstein, Dracula and whatever else. Horrid show. Maybe if I hadn't just watched 2 seasons of HBO's Carnivale after it was released on Amazon Prime, I wouldn't have been spoiled by something of quality. They managed to combine characters with different powers and make an engaging show, Penny Dreadful doesn't even try :-( Watch Carnivale, you'll see ;-) Read more

3x1: The Day Tennyson Died recap: In Malcolm’s empty townhouse, the letters pile up inside the front door. Vanessa lies on her bed, staring off into space. She finally goes downstairs to the kitchen to feed herself. There’s a knock at the door and Vanessa cowers away. Ferdinand calls out and says that he knows Vanessa is there, and promises that he won’t leave until she answers. Vanessa finally lets him in and takes a seat. The bells toll throughout London, and Ferdinand explains that Tennyson has died. He then points out that Vanessa has ignored his cards and letters, and suggests that he bring her out of hiding. Ferdinand suggests that she see a mental doctor who he saw when he was depressed over his... unique sexual nature. She helped Ferdinand accept his nature. He leaves the doctor’s card and says that their lives are their own, and promises to make her an appointment. Vanessa smiles and rests her head in his lap, crying, and Ferdinand gently strokes her hair... read more.

2x10: And They Were Enemies recap: In his wolfman form, Ethan pounds at the door after killing Sembene. Outside, Hecate listens and then goes to the cellar. The Vanessa fetish reminds Vanessa of all of the people she has killed and all of the people yet to come. Vanessa confirms that Lucifer is speaking through the fetish, and Lucifer addresses her as Amunet. She realizes that Lucifer needs her to agree to join forces with him, and Lucifer concedes that Vanessa must give her soul freely. Evelyn admits that she will receive eternal youth in return for delivering Vanessa to Lucifer, and points out that Vanessa claims to serve the angels while spreading death and depravity. When Vanessa refuses to compound her sins, Lucifer says that she condemned herself when she spoke the Verbis Diablo and embraced her midnight powers to take the life of another. Evelyn says that Lucifer will never reject Vanessa, but Vanessa says that she has no power to tempt her. Lucifer tells Vanessa to know herself... read more.

2x9: And Hell Itself My Only Foe recap: At the cottage, Ethan and Vanessa are sleeping in separate room. Ethan is downstairs, and wakes up with a jerk when Roper lights his cigarette and aims a gun at him. The Pinkerton man notes that he's tossed Ethan's guns outside, and calls Vanessa down. As she comes downstairs, Roper drives his knife into the tabletop and removes his half-mask to reveal his scarred features. He tells Vanessa that Ethan disfigured him, and tells her to put a set of manacles on Ethan that he provides... read more.

2x8: Memento Mori recap: The next morning, Brona wakes up next to the corpse of the man she killed. She talks to it, saying that it'll never grow up now, kisses its eye, then dresses and walks out... read more.

2x7: Little Scorpion recap: In the morning in the townhouse cellar, Ethan returns to his human form. Sembene tells him that he has seen men who can change their skins, and don't always remember what happened. He says that it is what it is and he knows Ethan for who he really is regardless of his skin. Ethan asks Sembene what he saw... read more.
