Hugh Laurie

The man best known in his homeland for portraying bumbling, English upper-class twits has become a sex symbol in the US for his role as a brooding, brilliant, blue-eyed American doctor in the hit series House.

Hugh Laurie was born in Oxford, in 1959, the youngest of four children. His father was a GP and Hugh was expected to follow him into the profession. He felt guilty that this didn't come about. The irony that he has achieved worldwide fame through being a doctor, albeit on TV, has not escaped him. In 1996, Hugh Laurie first admitted he was clinically depressed. He diagnosed this himself when, during a charity stock car race, with cars flying and exploding around him, he felt bored.Psychotherapy eventually confirmed his condition. His insecurities stemmed, it would seem, from a mother who continually criticised him, having set goals for him that he could never attain.

Trivia

Hugh Laurie has told interviewers he doesn't watch House and can talk about the show only in terms of the scripts he reads.

Not only did Hugh Laurie take up the sport of boxing to stay fit and because he enjoys it, he believes it is a good way to keep his ego in check.

So he may stay in touch with his children in England while he is in California, Hugh Laurie uses the internet. He has a camera on his computer and can "see" them everyday.

Hugh Laurie has always been an avid motorcycle enthusiast. When he got the role on House and moved to Los Angeles, he purchased a black Triumph Bonneville motorcycle.

Hugh Laurie auditioned for his role in House M.D. via a video shoot in a hotel bathroom in Namibia, where he was shooting the film Flight of the Phoenix. At the time, the producers were completely unaware that Hugh was English.

Hugh's birth name is James Hugh Calum Laurie.

In 2005, Hugh Laurie won the Television Critics Association Award in Individual Achievement for Drama.

Hugh is an accomplished musician, and performs as a keyboardist with the rock band Poor White Trash.

Hugh's son Charlie calls him padre (father in Spanish).

Appeared uncredited on an episode of Friends (The One With Ross's Wedding) speaking with his natural accent.

Hugh Laurie Quotes
I'm not a Twitter person, Jonathan (answering a question of talkmaster Jonathan Ross), I am more of a 'shhh' person. I've subscribed to this 'shhh' network. When you write something down, but don't send it anywhere.

To be able to pretend to be something that I'm frankly not is very liberating and exciting.
